Engagement session in Big Sur, CA

Falling in love at Garrapata State Park

There is something truly special about capturing the love and connection between two people through the lens of a camera. It is a privilege to be invited into someone's life and given the opportunity to document their most intimate moments. Simi and Patrick's engagement session along the stunning Big Sur coastline was no exception.

As we ventured into the planning process, it became clear that this session was about more than just beautiful photographs. It was about creating a timeless and love-centered experience that would forever capture the essence of their relationship–as a couple and as a family. From choosing the location to discussing outfits and accessories, every decision was made with the intention of bringing out their personalities and telling their unique story.

On the day of the shoot, we arrived to find Garrapata State Park in heavy fog. However, as I assured Simi and Patrick, the overcast lighting added a touch of moodiness to the photos and enhanced their natural beauty, all while smoothing out skin tones. And sometimes, the unexpected can bring out the most extraordinary results.

As we walked down to the beach, we exchanged stories and laughter, connecting on a deeper level and really getting to know each other beyond the photographer and couple relationship. We talked about their upcoming wedding at the Oak & Vine Vineyard Estate in Templeton, CA, and the excitement they felt about celebrating with their loved ones. It was in these moments, these casual and candid conversations, where their love and partnership really began to become clear to me.

Throughout the session, my goal was to document their dynamic and genuine connection. I wanted to capture the way they looked at each other, how they interacted, and how they cherished their fur baby, Ragnar. The poses and prompts were kept relaxed and laid back, allowing their true personalities to shine through. We frolicked on the beach, gave Ragnar lots of belly rubs, and took a few moments to really appreciate the view, reveling in the joy of having the entire coastline to ourselves.

Ragnar, their adorable pup, effortlessly stole the show, posing for photos unprompted and making us all laugh throughout the entire session. Simi and Patrick were incredibly open to my ideas and embraced the joy and love that radiated from within. The session ended on the foggy bluffs, where we shared a glass of pinot noir and laughed about Ragnar's playful antics during the shoot.

Reflecting on this incredible experience, it is evident that photography goes beyond capturing beautiful images. It is about capturing the essence of a couple's love, their unique journey, and the deeper emotions that lie within. It is about creating a space where authenticity and vulnerability can flourish, unearthing the true beauty of their relationship.

This session with Simi and Patrick was a testament to the power of love and the beauty of capturing it through photography. It was an experience of growth and reflection, a reminder that the true magic lies in the moments shared and the emotions felt–not just a sunset. As a photographer, I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of these stories and to witness the profound connection between two souls.

Capturing love, one frame at a time.

3 tips for planning your engagement session in Big Sur

For those planning their own engagement session along the Big Sur coastline, there are a few key things to keep in mind. Here are three lessons I learned from this shoot:

  1. Know your location: Big Sur is a large area and doesn't have cell reception, so it's important to plan ahead and know exactly where you're going. I recommend sharing specific GPS coordinates to avoid confusion.

  2. Avoid the crowds: Big Sur is a popular spot for tourists and other couples getting married. For a more private and enjoyable experience, plan your session for a weekday–ideally Monday through Wednesday. This will help limit the number of people sharing the coastline with you.

  3. Be prepared for different weather conditions: Big Sur's weather can be unpredictable. Although we hoped for a classic golden sunset, we ended up with a moody and romantic foggy evening. If you have your heart set on a specific type of lighting or scenery, you might want to consider a location more inland to ensure you get the look you desire.
